At School is Easy Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, we’re dedicated to helping every student achieve their potential.
Our tutors understand that test-taking can be difficult, especially on challenging college entrance exams like the ACT. That’s why we focus on a comprehensive teaching strategy that gives students the tools they need to improve their scores, build confidence, reduce test anxiety, and achieve their academic goals in both high school and college.
What You Need To Know About The ACT
The ACT is a standardized college entrance exam taken by nearly 2 million students every year. The test is offered 7 times throughout the year and is taken by Juniors and Seniors, although many students begin preparing as Sophomores or Freshmen.
The ACT is comprised of English, Math, Reading, and Science sections, with an optional essay writing component. Each section is scored on a scale of 1-36. Students receive a composite score – the rounded average of the 4 sections – for their college applications. The optional essay writing section is scored separately out of 12 points.
The test lasts for 2 hours and 55 minutes, or 3 hours and 35 minutes if the writing section is included. All sections must be taken at the same time.
Students may retake the exam up to 12 times. Typically, only the best score is sent to universities, although some schools require an average of all tests taken.
The ACT is accepted by all four-year universities in the United States, and over 225 universities abroad. Many schools require an SAT or ACT score, including The University of Iowa, Iowa University, and Grinnell College. It’s an essential component of the college admissions process, and one our tutors focus on in-depth to help students achieve their very best.
There are no prerequisites for the ACT exam. The test is designed for high school students and is taken across the world by applicants to US colleges. To score high on the exam, preparation is key.
A recent study examined the results of students who took different kinds of test prep courses. Some self-studied at home while others took group classes. Others enjoyed one-on-one tutoring to ensure their exam success.
The results? Only students with private tutors had significant impact on their scores. Group classes and self- study courses had very minimal effect (PDF link to the study, results on page 22). That kind of improvement can make the difference on even the most well-rounded college applications.
While the results of this study may seem surprising at first, there’s a clear reason why tutoring makes the difference. Our certified, experienced tutors know how to guide each student individually to their highest level of success. You just get better results with a personalized plan created by a professional tutor.
