5 Ways Students Can Beat the Monday Blues

Parents and students alike frequently have a tough time dragging their exhausted bodies out of bed on a Monday morning.  Feeling fresh, awake and rejuvenated for the upcoming school week is vital to a student’s success. We hope to help them achieve this by offering these 5 tips on beating the Monday Blues.

1. Rest.

A lack of sleep can lead to poor academic performance by negatively affecting memory and concentration. Getting a good night’s sleep is incredibly important to getting off to a flying start Monday morning. This entails going to bed at a reasonable time and getting the recommended eight hours of sleep. Also, it is highly recommended to not watch television, stare at a computer or play on a gaming device at least an hour before going to bed.

2. Have a weekly plan.

Setting goals and having structure are imperative to staying on task throughout the week. Every student is different so find what routine works best for you. Writing down weekly goals and a schedule can be extremely beneficial to following your plan and getting in the groove.

3. Eat a healthy breakfast.

You frequently hear that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and that is the absolute truth. Studies have proven that being hungry can lead to a lack of concentration, sluggishness and behavioural problems. Taking it a step further you may want to eat ‘smart foods’ that help prevent the damage that accompanies aging of the brain.

4. Exercise.

Getting up early to get the body moving and do some sort of physical activity has many positives to academic performance. Most obvious is that it increases oxygen flow to the brain which can improve concentration and cognitive skills. Equally as important is it can help a student gain confidence and improve their behaviour. Exercise can come in many forms (walking, skipping rope, yoga) but it is preferable to do something you enjoy.

5. Eliminate negativity.

Mondays are associated with being the worst day of the week and all the negative connotations that come along with that. Changing the mindset on Monday could kick start you to a productive, enjoyable week. Scheduling something you love to do on a Monday (shooting hoops, going to movies, etc.) can give you something to look forward to and put you in a good mood. As a parent, use Mondays to give your kids their allowance, play a board game as a family, or do anything that gives the day positive vibes.
